It is also vital in the understanding of soil health and its ability to grow high yielding, good quality grass and crops. How to Sample Correctly
Before Sampling:
- Gather soil sampling equipment;
- Suitable soil corer – available from the laboratory and at your local Dairygold Branch Stores.
- Sample Bag or box
- Analysis request from
- Soil sample at least every 3-5 years
- Do not sample an area greater than 4 ha
- Do not take a soil sample until 3 to 6 months after the last application of P and K or for 2 years where lime was applied
- Take separate samples from areas that are different in:
- Soil type
- Previous cropping history
- Slope
- Drainage
- Avoid any unusual spots:
- Old Fences
- Ditches
- Drinking troughs
- Dung or urine patches
- Where fertiliser, manure or lime has been heaped or spilled
- For a representative sample take a minimum of 20 soil cores by following a W shaped pattern across the sampling area and mix them together.
- Ensure soil cores are taken to the correct sampling depth of 100mm (4″)
- Place the soil sample ins a sample bag which should be labelled with the field number and customer account number
- Fill out the soil sample detail form in full to avail of a fertiliser plan.
- Return samples to Dairygold Agri Services Laboratory, Lombardstown
