The soil results provided by the Dairygold Analytical Services Laboratory arm our customers with a key decision-making tool that ensures the effective and efficient use of lime, fertilisers and trace elements.

How to Sample Correctly

Before Sampling:

  • Gather soil sampling equipment;
    • Suitable soil corer – available from the laboratory and at your local Dairygold Branch Stores.
    • Sample Bag or box
    • Analysis request from
  • Soil sample at least every 3-5 years
  • Do not sample an area greater than 4 ha
  • Do not take a soil sample until 3 to 6 months after the last application of P and K or for 2 years where lime was applied

 

  • Take separate samples from areas that are different in:
    • Soil type
    • Previous cropping history
    • Slope
    • Drainage
  • Avoid any unusual spots:
    • Old Fences
    • Ditches
    • Drinking troughs
    • Dung or urine patches
    • Where fertiliser, manure or lime has been heaped or spilled
  • For a representative sample take a minimum of 20 soil cores by following a W shaped pattern across the sampling area and mix them together.
  • Ensure soil cores are taken to the correct sampling depth of 100mm (4″)
  • Place the soil sample ins a sample bag which should be labelled with the field number and customer account number
  • Fill out the soil sample detail form in full to avail of a fertiliser plan.
  • Return samples to Dairygold Agri Services Laboratory, Lombardstown
